Helpful Tips
Grab WeTaxi or Allo Taxi before landing. These apps lock in reliable rides across Antananarivo. Skip the airport queue. Tap, ride, done.
Ride the orange taxi-be minivans. Each shows a route number. Fares stay cheap. Hand the conductor small bills. Exact change wins smiles.
Ambodivona is the city's beating hub. Every taxi-be line meets here. Switch neighborhoods in minutes. Watch the swirl, then hop aboard.
Haggle the fare before you sit. Most cabs lack meters. Short hops cost little. Cross-town runs cost more. Know the price, then roll.
Common Scams to Avoid
Taxi drivers at Ivato International Airport often quote inflated flat fares to downtown Antananarivo instead of using the meter, sometimes demanding 3-4 times the normal rate. Always insist on the meter or agree on a fare before entering the taxi, and consider using the official airport taxi counter inside the terminal.
Unofficial porters aggressively grab luggage from arriving passengers and then demand excessive fees for carrying bags just a few meters to taxis or shuttles. Politely but firmly decline their services unless you specifically need assistance, and keep your bags close.
Currency exchange booths in the arrival area typically offer poor rates compared to banks in the city, with some adding hidden fees or giving outdated bills that merchants won't accept. Exchange only a small amount at the airport for immediate needs, then use banks or ATMs in town for better rates.
